The 1871 census was taken for the night of Saturday/Sunday 2nd/3rd April 1871. Nationally individual census forms were distributed to all households a couple of days before census night and completed forms were collected during the following days. All of the details from the individual forms were later sorted and copied by the Enumerators into the Census books which are the original records that can be viewed today. It is very likely that this national format was adopted and complied with by the Enumerators in Ringmer. The transcription has been taken using both photocopies of the Census books from the County Records Office and from on-line access to these records. .Every effort has been made to ensure that this is an accurate transcription. Place names, first and family names have been recorded as spelt on the census records rather than using accepted current day spellings. Also in District 4 abbreviated first names are recorded as shown on the originals. It should be noted that transcription can be made more difficult by old handwriting styles and sometimes illegible writing and, therefore, errors may have been made.
The parish of Ringmer was divided into 3 Enumeration Districts. Each Enumerator wrote the description of their district from the copy supplied to him by the Registrar. Any explanatory notes or observations calculated to make the description clearer or more complete, were added by the Enumerator. The following extracts are the descriptions of the three Enumeration Districts and are recorded here in their original form and spellings.
Enumeration District 4: Enumerator Mr William Brown Martin. “Part of the Parish of Ringmer (South East part) From & including the Ringmer (late) Toll Gate House down the road to Rushy Green taking all the houses on the East Side, up Harrison Lane to the Turnpike road, then up the Turnpike Road as far as Broyle Lane, up Broyle Lane to the Black Gate through the View to the Mount Farm House taking the whole of the Houses on the East side of the Road comprising the Pest House, Broyle Plain, Broyle Place, Railway Inn, Moor Lane, and Ashton Green.”
Enumeration District 5: Enumerator: Mr. Charles Washer “Part of the Parish of Ringmer (South West part) From the site of the late Toll Gate, down the Road to Rushy Green taking all the Houses on the west side up Harrison’s Lane crossing the Turnpike Road up Bishop’s Lane crossing Norlington Lane, round Dodson’s Corner down Church Lane to Park Gate including Park Farm House, Middleham, Union Workhouse, Vicarage, Delves House, the Houses on the Green and the whole of the Houses in the Village.”
Enumeration District 6: Enumerator: Mr. George Huntly “Part of the Parish of Ringmer (North West) From & including Park Gate House, up Church Lane, to Dodson’s Corner; crossing Norlington Lane, down Bishops Lane, taking all the Houses on the North side to the Turnpike Road; up the Turn-Pike road to Broyle Lane; up Broyle Lane to the Black Gate, taking all the Houses on the “West side”, through The View, to Oaklands, taking Plashet Park houses, “Old Ship”, Clay Hill, Swing-gate Norlington Lane, “Cock Inn” and Wellingham Houses.”
Points of interest There are quite a few school aged children who have not been recorded as scholars including all the children in some families. Conversely there is a goodly number of children who are only aged 2 or 3 years old but who are listed as scholars. It is noted that some of these often come from very large families. Boys as young as 11 years old are listed as “Ag. Lab” (Agricultural Labourer) and there are even one or two labourers recorded as being only 9 years old. There are 16 children in the Ringmer Workhouse (10 boys and 6 girls), the youngest being Louisa Greening aged 7. In the Parish there are 5 sets of twins, 4 of which were born in Ringmer. The youngest resident is Susan Washer whose age was recorded as 11 days old. The oldest man is T. E. Paine, aged 93, a retired tailor, born in Sidlesham, Sussex living at Pest House, Upper Lodge. The oldest Ringmer born man is Robert Beck aged 86 still listed as an “Ag. Lab” living in Rushy Green. There are three women listed as aged 80, but only one of which was Ringmer born, that being Lucy Packham, a widow living with her granddaughter at Dobson’s Corner. With regard to persons not dwelling in houses, Francis Wickens, Chimney Sweep and his family are listed as sleeping in Green Lane Barn. Although not itemised as such, William Lee is recorded as having “slept in stable or lodge”. Under the column entitled occupation, the Enumerator originally wrote “No abode. Travels the County from information”. This was then crossed out and “formerly Ag. Lab” is recorded.
Of the total population of 1478, 1353 were born in Sussex and of those 780 were Ringmer born. However 21 other English counties were listed as places of birth as well as Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Two residents were recorded as having been born in the East Indies – Catherine aged 7 the daughter of Stephen Bachelor, a “Chelsea Out Pensioner living at The Green; and Eliza wife of the vicar of Ringmer, Edward Symons. Mary Ann Towner aged 29, the married daughter of Joseph Hillman, Master Blacksmith living on Ringmer Road has a birth place recorded as New Orleans, State of Louisiana, America but it is noted that she is a British Subject.
Under the disability column the following categories are listed: 5 Blind (1 from birth, 1 from fever, 1 from disease of eye, 1 from gun accident); 1 Deaf; 3 Deaf & Dumb from birth; 1 Cripple; 3 Imbeciles; and 1 Idiot. Also recorded under the occupation column is Benjamin Brinkhurst who is described as a ”Ag Lab using glasses” & William Cosham as a “Ag Lab out of employ (cripple)”.
As might be expected the biggest employers in the parish are the farmers. The largest recorded farm is 500 acres owned by George Holmden, of Old House, Neves Lane who is listed as employing 10 men and 5 boys. Other employers in the parish were master craftsmen though most of them only employed 2 or 3 men at most. The largest employer in the parish is Henry Turner Senior who as a brickmaker and farmer of 20 acres at Brickyard House employed 12 men and 4 boys. Two Master Builders, Joseph Miller of Broyle Lane and William Brown Martin living on Ringmer Road employed 6 and 4 men respectively. Six men were listed as being employed by A.W. Crosskey at the Wellingham Brewery. There are 28 farmers although some of these are very small farms. There are also 5 farm bailiffs. 232 men are listed as purely “Ag. Labs”. There are also others categorised as chalkpit, bricklayer’s, road and brewer’s labourers. Other rural occupations listed are: engine driver to “thrashing” machine; hay trusser; shepherd; ox-boy; cowboy; thatcher; mole catcher and rat catcher. There are master craftsmen in the following trades: blacksmith; maltster; brewer; wheelwright; gardener; landscape gardener; shoemaker; miller; builder, butcher; baker; grocer & draper; cabinetmaker and chimney sweeper. There are journeymen in the following trades: blacksmith; bricklayer; carpenter; painter; shoemaker; tailor and wheelwright. A huntsman, a 1st and a 2nd whipperman, a stud groom and a kennelman are employed at the South Down Fox Hunt. There are 5 inn keepers and 1 beer house keeper listed.
The army is represented by a retired Lieut. Col. of the militia, a militiaman and two men are listed as “Chelsea out pensioners” and one as a “Greenwich pensioner”.
Female occupations include: school teachers; governesses; laundresses; laundress maids; charwomen; and dressmakers. There are also women in domestic service such as housekeepers, cooks, housemaids, nurses and general domestic servants. A notable female listed occupation is that of house agent. Most wives are listed without an occupation but some are described in terms of their husband’s occupations such as farmer, gardener and innkeeper. One is listed in terms of “a butler’s wife” and another as “wife of engine driver of thrashing machine”.
Other than the vicar, a retired solicitor, a police constable and school teachers the professions/vocational occupations are not very well represented. There are 10 annuitants listed.
A boarder at Broyle Place is listed as being “a manufacturer of sewing machines”. Two other entries state “pedler attends fairs and clubs with sweets and toys for sale” and “dealer in sweets”; both of whom may have been of some interest to the younger members of the parish.
The total population of the parish is recorded as 1478 (773 male and 705 female). In the 1861 Census the population was 1519 (767 male and 752 female) and in the 1881 Census it was 1388 (734 male and 654 female). Of the 332 individual census schedules most were completed by householders; only 25 were required to be completed by the Enumerators. There is one example of a possible mishearing caused by an accent, as St.Ives has been recorded as “St.Oilves”. |

The Census of Ringmer
General Introduction
|
|
There have been attempts to count and record the population of England ever since the Domesday Book and probably even before then. Those in authority have wanted this information for many purposes, such as taxation, raising armies and recording land use. In the early days there was no attempt to cover the entire country, and the results were somewhat sketchy. In the eighteenth century there was a great political debate as to whether the population was rising or falling and whether or not the agricultural workers were able to produce enough food for everyone. This brought about the census as we understand it today.
With the exception of 1941, the census has been taken every ten years since 1801. Collecting information for the early censuses was the responsibility of the clergy and the overseers of the poor. The clergy were involved as there were originally questions relating to baptisms, marriages and burials. |
| So, Mr. Smith, let's summarise shall we... You are 50, your wife is 48. You live here with 10 of your children, ranging in age from 24 to 6 months. You have 3 grandchildren aged 5 years to 3 weeks.... and your widowed mother still insists that she is only 31! | The first census to record names was taken on Sunday 6 June in 1841. This is the first census on the Ringmer website. Current plans are to display the indices for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. Please be patient - enumerators handwriting can be difficult to read, making indexing slow and laborious. |
Full transcriptions are not displayed. Listed here you will only find the names of those staying in Ringmer on the night before census day. If you think you have found someone you are looking for, you are welcome to request further information by e-mailing the website at rhsg@ringmer.info. Your ‘name’ will then be looked up and any further information available will be forwarded to you. Different people do the look-ups for different censuses, so please state which name on which census you are interested in.
I would like to record here my thanks to those who have devoted much time to make these indexes available to us. You will find the individual censuses attributed to the person who transcribed them.

Ringmer 1901 Census
Sunday, 31 March 1901: Introduction to the 1901 Census
by Sue Burton
As mentioned earlier, a census has been taken in England and Wales every 10 years since 1801, except for 1941 for obvious reasons. The first four censuses were little more than head-counts and did not contain actual lists of names. From 1841 onwards, the census returns, containing names of individuals, were kept, and are now held at the Family Records Centre in London and, for Ringmer, at the East Sussex Record Office in Lewes. There is a 100-year closure on the records so the most recent census open to public inspection is that for 1901, although restricted information from later censuses can be obtained from the Public Record Office for a fee, currently £40.
The 1901 census was taken on the night of Sunday 31st March. As for earlier censuses, Ringmer was divided into 3 enumeration districts. The enumerators were William POCKNEY, possibly a carpenter living in Norlington Lane, C WASHER, possibly Charles, another carpenter living in Broyle Side and Frank WASHER, the church clerk and school officer who was living in School Hill. As with all transcriptions, there are no guarantees as to accuracy and any information should be checked against the original.

Ringmer 1891 Census
Sunday, 5 April 1891: Introduction to the 1891 Census
by Sue Burton
As mentioned earlier, a census has been taken in England and Wales every 10 years since 1801, except for 1941 for obvious reasons. The first four censuses were little more than head-counts and did not contain actual lists of names. From 1841 onwards, the census returns, containing names of individuals, were kept, and are now held at the Family Records Centre in London and, for Ringmer, at the East Sussex Record Office in Lewes. There is a 100-year closure on the records so the most recent census open to public inspection is that for 1891, although restricted information from later censuses can be obtained from the Public Record Office for a fee.The 1891 census was taken on the night of Sunday 5th April. In addition to the information collected in 1881, householders were now asked how many rooms their family occupied, if less than five. But no instructions were given on the census schedule as to what constituted a room. Were large cupboards or indoor toilets to be included? One example, of an enumerator misinterpreting his instructions has been found in Warrington. Here the enumerator placed the figure '1' against the address of each householder whose family occupied fewer than five rooms. At least one street enumerated by him still stands today - a row of four-roomed terraced houses. Information was also now collected on whether each individual was an employer, an employee or neither, i.e. self-employed. In addition, the 1891 census returns for Wales and Monmouth show whether the person spoke English, Welsh or both.
As for earlier censuses, Ringmer was divided into 3 enumeration districts. The enumerators were H J Glover, Charles Pockney and Frank Washer. The first is not to be found in this transcription, the second maybe the Congregational Minister and the third maybe a 21-year old painter. As with all transcriptions, there are no guarantees as to accuracy and any information should be checked against the original.
The 1901 census will be available for public inspection in January 2002. The Public Record Office intends that it will be searchable via the Internet. Access to the Index and some detail will be available free of charge but payment, probably using a credit card, will need to be made to view a full transcription of the details of an individual or to view an image of the page itself. Ringmer 1881 Census
Sunday 3 April 1881: Introduction to the 1881 Census
by Malcolm Crouch
The head of the house was to complete their individual household schedules recording who was in their household during the period Sunday night Monday morning. On the morning after census night, the enumerators collected the household’s schedules. If these were not completed properly, the census enumerator was supposed to ask for extra details at the doorstep, although there is considerable evidence that this was not done uniformly. If the householder was unable to fill in the schedule, perhaps because he or she was illiterate, the census enumerator was to fill it in for them. Then there were the unhelpful ones who just plainly became absent from their abode. There is a story of one gentleman who slept not in his house but in a field under a hedge for a few nights so he did not have to fill in his form.
An enumerator spoke of how he knocked on doors for ages knowing full well that the occupants where hiding inside the house, not wanting to see him, others would hurl abuse and tell them to shove off, in no uncertain terms. Whether this happened in Ringmer I do not know but I guess similar things went on, after all, people are people!
The census itself is an account of all the people who filled in the census at that time, and returned it to the proper office. The enumerators, of whom there were three in Ringmer, [William F. Martin (Builder), Charles Washer (Parish Clerk) and William Berry (grocer)] had quite a job on their hands, trying to find many people who had their suspicions about filling in forms about themselves and their families. Even today I am sure there are people who still think this way (the big brother syndrome). It is a shame that people felt this way as for many a Family Historian these census returns are a great source of information, a moment in time captured. Obviously this was not their intention to start with but they were compiled into enumerator books and used for various statistical purposes.
The census would show details of where you were on that particular night, and of course some people were not at home! This sometimes makes tracing somebody very difficult, as they are not where you would expect them to be. For example your G G Grandfather might be at his house in Ringmer with his three sons, but there is no G G Grandmother, who you know was still alive then, so why wasn’t her name listed? Possibly she had gone off to visit Aunt Maude in Catsfield or Uncle Fred’s place in Newcastle. Either way wherever she was at that time would be the census that her name would be entered on as a visitor. I have even found entries where the visitor to one household only lived next door! When a household is headed by a woman described as a wife, but no husband is present, he might be away on business, or he might be in hospital or even in prison.
A considerable number of people were not in normal households on the census night and special arrangements had to be made for their enumeration. These people included the inmates of institutions, the crews of vessels afloat, the army, itinerants and travellers, and night workers.
Children sometimes had their ages inflated because of the Factory Act and other child labour laws. Many people gave their place of birth as the earliest remembered place of residence.
This index and data were taken from the IGI CD Rom processed by the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-Day Saints, from a Family History Library Film, copied from the original schedules. There may be mistakes made in the transcribing at any time and a search of the original schedules is recommended.

by Heather Osmer
This census was taken for the night of Sunday 7th April 1861.Records on Page 8 of Enumeration District 5 (39 to 42) are missing.
Transcribing this document from photocopies from film of the original records has been difficult & in some places impossible. The original handwriting of all three enumerators is illegible in places. Transcribing was made even more difficult by poor photocopies of poor quality film. We have done our best to work out what has been recorded but there will be some errors.
The parish of Ringmer was divided into 3 Enumeration Districts. Each enumerator wrote the description of their district from the Copy supplied to him by the Registrar. Any explanatory notes or observations calculated to make the description clearer or more complete, may be added by the Enumerator

Ringmer 1851 Census
Sunday, 30 March 1851: Introduction to the 1851 Census
by John Kay
The system of national census returns every ten years began in 1801, but the surviving early census records tell us little more than the number of people and houses in Ringmer parish. Successive censuses became progressively more detailed, and that for 1841 is the first for which the enumerators' returns, giving the names of all the individuals counted, have survived. The 1841 census listed all the people living in each house on census day, their occupations, their approximate ages (the ages of those over 15 being rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5), and whether or not they had been born in the County of Sussex. From 1851 even more detailed information has survived. Exact ages and parish of birth were recorded, together with each person's marital status and relationship to the householder.
As in 1841, the large parish of Ringmer was divided into three sections, each recorded by a different enumerator. Each of the three sections was prefaced by a description of its bounds. The approximate routes followed by the three Ringmer enumerators can thus be traced and many households can be assigned to a specific house. Where roads formed the boundaries between sections (e.g. Broyle Lane), different enumerators recorded the opposite sides of the road. Unoccupied houses were also noted.
The names recorded were those of the people who resided in the parish on the night preceding census day. Some visitors are included and presumably a corresponding number of normal residents are omitted. The spelling of names is that of the enumerators. No significance should be attached to minor spelling variations - at a time when many were illiterate, the enumerators just had to manage as best they could. Ages and birthplaces also depend on the reliability of the information given to the enumerators, and of course on the accuracy of recording and transcription – we have done our best not to introduce errors at this stage.

Ringmer 1841 Census
Sunday, 6 June 1841: Introduction to the 1841 Census
by John Kay
The system of national census returns every ten years began in 1801, but the early census records tell us little more than the number of people and houses in each parish. Successive censuses became progressively more detailed, but that of 1841 is the first for which the enumerators' returns, giving the names of all the individuals counted, have survived. In addition to listing all the people living in each house on census day, the enumerators recorded their occupations, their approximate ages (the ages of those over 15 being rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5), and whether or not they had been born in the County of Sussex. Those born outside England were also noted, as were empty houses and houses in the course of construction.
From 1851 even more detailed information has survived. Exact ages and birthplaces were recorded, together with each person's marital status and relationship to the householder, and more detailed information about occupations. However, the 1841 census has been selected for transcription here because of its proximity in date to other key documents for local historians, such as the Tithe Awards (1839-1843 for Ringmer) and a comprehensive 1839 Rental of the Manor of Ringmer.
The large parish of Ringmer was divided into three sections, each recorded by a different enumerator. Thomas Rogers, a young farmer living at Fingerpost Farm, was responsible for the north-east of the parish. William Bray, a schoolmaster, parish functionary and retired workhouse master living on Church Hill, covered the north-west, and William Martin (probably the young carpenter of that name) was left with the whole area south of the present Lewes and Laughton Roads. The occupants of the workhouse and the lunatic asylum were separately listed by their respective masters.
Each of the three sections into which Ringmer was divided was prefaced by a description of its bounds. The actual routes followed by the three Ringmer enumerators can easily be traced by comparison with the Tithe Map, and almost every household can be assigned to a specific house.
The names recorded are those of the people who resided in the parish on the night preceding census day. Some visitors are included and presumably a corresponding number of normal residents are omitted. At least three heads of Ringmer families who were normally resident are omitted. The spelling of names is that of the enumerators, except that I have set out in full the contracted forms of Christian names favoured by William Bray. No significance should be attached to minor variations such as Ford, Foord and Fourd, or the eight different spellings of the Christian name Philadelphia - at a time when most of their bearers were illiterate, the enumerators just had to manage as best they could. In general the literacy of the enumerators was clearly good, although Jamima, Mariah, Marther, Masilla, Prissila and the like testify to the difficulties they experienced with unfamiliar names, and William Bray's rendering of 'shiperd' is perhaps not what would be expected of a schoolmaster. Their computations are also accurate, except that William Martin omitted three of the six unoccupied houses in his area from his totals.
Thomas Rogers and William Bray give the ages of those over 15 rounded down to the nearest five in the prescribed way, although both give a few ages more precisely, apparently at random. William Martin attempts greater precision in many cases. The accuracy of the ages given has not been checked, although this could be done in many cases by reference to parish registers or the 1351 census.
The entries in the category headed 'Profession, Trade, Employment or Of Independent Means' are also given here as in the original. Common abbreviations used are:-
| J or Jn | Journeyman |
| Ap | Apprentice |
| M S or F S | Male or Female Servant |
| M | Maker (as in Cabinet Maker, Shoe Maker) |
| Mt | Merchant |
| Ind | Of Independent Means |
| Vis | Visitor |
| Ag Lab | Agricultural Labourer |
Some entries in this category, such as visitor or lodger, are not strictly occupations. Occupations other than servant are only rarely given to women, but they are assigned to most males over the age of 12, only 17 men and 38 boys in Ringmer having blank entries in this column. A significant proportion of the men were adult sons of farmers, who the enumerators seem to have found difficult to classify. Most of the boys were probably actually employed in agriculture. William Martin is responsible for most of these omissions, about 30 boys and young men living with their parents being assigned no occupation in his section, while the other two enumerators failed to classify only a much smaller proportion of apparently similar people.
The reliability of the occupations given is difficult to assess, but the entry giving Ellen Catt, age 12, as the farmer at Clayhill looks suspect. Many people were very flexible in their trades. Henry Berry, here at 83 a farmer, is described in other documents variously as maltster, carpenter and wheelwright, and agricultural labourers were doubtless prepared to take on other forms of labour too. The servants were certainly a very varied class, and not all were domestic staff. The servants of farmers and tradesmen included live-in assistants as well as house servants, while William Withers, listed as a servant at Glyndebourne, was actually the estate agent and, a year or two later, the farmer of a 500 acre farm. Most heterogeneous of all were the 'Independents', a category which ranged from members of the county gentry and prosperous retired tradesmen to the impotent proletarian poor, lodging in labourers' cottages and supported by charity doles or tiny annuities.
The final entry for each individual is whether he or she was born in the County of Sussex. Overwhelmingly the answer to this question was positive, and only negative answers, indicated by the letter N, are included in this transcription. William Martin noted the birthplace of some individuals, but the only details recorded in the other two Ringmer sections were for two people born in Scotland (indicated by the letter S).

One of the differences between this and the previous census is that this time middle names or initials are more commonly recorded. The symbol * therefore indicates that more than one person in the 1901 census of Ringmer is recorded as having this name. Where two people have the same first name but different second names, both are listed in this index.
